Description

The Red River Hog has a striking red fur. There is a vague, white line that runs over the back. The animal has a blank face mask around the eyes, on the cheeks and on the jaws. The muzzle and the face are black. The hair on the jaw and the flanks is longer than on the rest of the fur.

The Red River Hog has length of 1 to 1.5 meter. The thin tail is 30 to 45 centimetres long. The boar is somewhat larger than the sow. Also, the male has recognizable humps/lumps on both sides of the muzzle and rather small, sharp battle cogs.

Reproduction

Females give birth once a year to a litter of up to 6 young (although 1 - 4 is more common), which are kept in large grass nests. Gestation lasts around 120 - 127 days.

Behavior

Red river hogs are most active during the night, resting in a self-excavated burrow deep within impenetrable vegetation during the day.  When frightened, the striped piglets crouch and "play possum".  As they get older, flight becomes the more frequent response.  However, when cornered or wounded, these pigs display considerable courage and frequently attack.  Red river hogs are fast runners and good swimmers.  They often root for tubers with their plow-like noses and can cause considerable damage to crops in a short period of time.  A sounder may have a very large home range, with over 4 km / 2.4 miles between resting and feeding areas.
